Q & A

City Bank's Online Bill Pay features often generate questions. Here are a few commonly asked questions we receive along with some straight forward answers. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact our Online Banking department at 575-258-2265 or 575-257-2265.

How long does it take before I am set up?

Set-up is instant. You can begin using Bill Pay immediately after taking the option to sign up.

Can I pay bills out of more than one account?

You can pay bills out of as many DDA accounts as you have access to on the Online Banking. (Bills can also be paid out of Savings Accounts, but are subject to regulatory requirements.)

How long will payment history be available?

Payment history for active and deleted payees is retained and viewable indefinitely.

What happens if I have a scheduled payment that falls over the weekend or a holiday?

Bills do not get paid on holidays or weekends. If a SCHEDULED bill payment falls on a holiday or weekend, it will be paid on the Friday before the weekend, or the last working day before the holiday.

How long do I have to add, delete, or edit a payment?

Refer to scenario 1 and 2 below. When setting up payments, you can choose to have an alert sent when the bill has been processed under the "options" tab.

How far in advance can a payment be set up?

Currently, a payment can be set up in advance to the year 2027.

How many payees am I able to set up?

There is no limit to the number of payees you can have.

Can an existing payee that is already set up be edited?

The only thing that can be edited on an existing electronic payee is the alias name on the account number. If you want to change anything else, the payee must be deleted and re-entered. On a check payee, you can edit the address.

Who, if anyone, am I not allowed to pay?

You cannot send Electronic Payments to a payee that is not in the electronic database. Payees are not verified for Check Payments. You may NOT make a payment of alimony, child support, taxes, or other government fees or court-directed payments through the service.

How long does it take a payment to reach the payee?

For an Electronic Payment, allow 3 to 4 business days from when the payment is submitted. For a check, we guarantee that the check will be in the mail the same day the payment is submitted. Refer to scenario 1 and 2 below. Allow 7 business days for a check payment. (Just a note - we have no control over the U.S. Postal Service.)

What is the maximum payment amount?

Electronic Payments are validated against the account balance prior to processing, and check payments settle against your account like any other check; therefore, there is no dollar limitation on payments made through Bill Pay. You are limited only by the amount of funds in your account.

Can I stop payment for bill checks?

You may stop payments for checks only. After the check is printed and mailed, the payment history will show the check number for that payment. The stop payment would be added in the same manner as for a regular check written out of your checkbook. However, you will be charged for this service.

When do funds for payments debit my account?

For an Electronic Payment, funds are debited the same day the payment is sent, if the payment is sent before 12:00 noon CST. Electronic Payments submitted after 12:00 noon CST are debited the next business day. Check Payment funds are debited from the account when the check clears the account.

Are checks drawn against my account mailed to the payee?

Yes. All checks issued through Bill Pay are encoded just as if they were a check from your own checkbook.

What happens if I do not have sufficient funds for payment?

Check Payments are handled in the same manner as a check written out of your checkbook against an insufficient balance. Electronic Payments are verified for funds availability during processing. If the funds are not available, the payment will continue to be attempted until either you have the funds to let it go through or you delete the payment altogether.

What type of payments, and when are transactions processed?

There are two types of payments - CHECK and ELECTRONIC. Checks are printed and mailed with your account number. You can use the float just like if you wrote the check yourself. City Bank sends Electronic Payments to the payees on the same day they are processed. All Bill Pay payments are processed each day at 12:00 noon Central Standard Time and 2:00 AM CST.
